It is said that ‘the first impression is the last impression’. This statement is true in various fields of life. But today I am going to talk about the impression that your guests get when they visit your home. A clean and beautifully organized home earn you praise from the visitors. But sometimes even if it looks clean and organized, it smells horrible and you can’t do anything about it. This would ruin your impression on the guests. If that is the case your visitors would want to leave your house as soon as they crossed your threshold.

Odor Neutralizers and Eliminators

Such offensive odors have a more serious reason behind them. They are the sign of the presence of mold and mildew that may have crawled up your walls and roofs or have attacked furniture and other times you keep inside your house. The mold and mildew, the cause of irritating smells, can even demolish your house if you let them grow and do not take essential steps to get rid of them.

There are many ways to deal with the growing mold, some more effective than others. But in this article, we will focus on how to beat the smell that prevails our homes even when we have eliminated the root cause of mold.

Odor controlling isn’t about masking the bad smell with some pleasant scent that when vanishes, the previous musty smell returns. There are a number of odor removers present in the market that may work too, but they aren’t a good choice. These expensive odor eliminators contain toxic chemicals that can affect your health adversely.

Various techniques are available to rid your house of the musty smell. Some of these techniques include natural ways that use the substances available in your homes. While, there are certain store-bought products that are highly effective against these odors.

White Chalk

One of the common places where this musty smell stubbornly settles is your closet. The closets have minimum air circulation and are moist and dark. With time, they develop a musty smell that gets into your clothes and when you wear those clothes it turns out to be a very unpleasant experience. But white chalk can aid you in beating that offensive smell. Hang some white chalk powder wrapped in a piece of cloth in your closet or just place the chalk on shelves. Chalk will not only neutralize the odor, but it also has the property of absorbing moisture so it prevents any future bad smells.

White Vinegar

Another technique which is also a very old one is the use of vinegar. This non-toxic compound is a cleaning and sanitizing agent that helps in killing many different kinds of bacteria and mold that release foul gasses.  The basements around the house have low temperature and moisture that makes them an ideal place for mold growth. Once you have eliminated the source of smells, you can put bowls of undiluted vinegar in the basements or areas that smell bad. The acetic acid in vinegar helps to fight off the smell effectively.

Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is a strong chemical that helps you in tackling the offensive and irritating smells filling your house. But one should be very careful while using it. Hydrogen peroxide is an oxidizing agent that harms fabrics and other soft and delicate materials or surfaces. Mix one part of hydrogen peroxide and two parts of water and pour the solution into a spray bottle. Spray this liquid on smelly areas. This mixture also removes mold and mildew.

Baking Soda

Sodium bicarbonate or baking soda is an ingredient that is found in almost all kitchens. Baking Soda is not only an important ingredient for many of our recipes but its significance surpasses it. It is an essential component of many air fresheners, sprays and odor removers. This is due to its odor neutralizing properties. It neutralizes pH levels. Artificial fragrances usually mask the musty smell but baking soda actually eliminates it. It’s effective against moisture. Sprinkle it on any offensive smelling area or scrub the area with a solution of baking soda and water. It is capable of doing wonders.
